As I've said before communication is communication, despite all the fancy tools and names for it. With that said, I have seen quite a few blog posts and links to resources lately touting how to improve your Twitter credibility or how to influence social media followers and win new ones. (Hey, didn't a preacher write a book about finding friends and influencing people?) Here's my list:
- Drop the jargon. Use the voice you might use if you were trying to explain your company, agency or new project to a group of 4-year-olds.
- Be willing to share. Again, if a 4-year-old wants to try some juice, they ask, and their little friend passes over the cup. The selfish ones soon don't have anyone to play with. Send out lots of links to cool tools, ideas and stuff. Preferably, not all of your spam links to your latest get-rich-quick scheme
- Ask for help nicely. If you don't have any idea how to start something, or just need a little help with the roadmap, ask nicely and you'll quickly see how much help everyone is willing to offer you. Then do the extra-nice thing and thank everyone for their help.
- Be polite even to the bullies. Spread courtesy and even the bullies will tell everyone how much they like you.
- Avoid the same tired topics already. We get it that you don't like a particular (fill in the blank) but even your friends get a little tired of the broken record. Imagine how the people who have no idea who you are feel?
That pretty much does it. All of the other advice covers pretty much the basics. I just wanted to add a few of my own ideas. Anyone care to share some new ideas?
