Fake PR: Leave Communicating to the Pros

Posted on Jan 03 , 2006 in Journalism & PR

I see this as equal to creating a "fake" newscast
or spoof video that only a few people will see, that eventually is seen by
everyone.  Quite a few folks have lost their jobs over stuff that went too
far and managed to offend.  But what happens when you create a fake press
release, post it out there, and then it becomes part of the stream?
Obviously, it was a fake, perhaps the reporter should have double-checked the
source, but this doesn't provide much help to the public relations
profession.  An outfitter in Afton, Wyo
wrote the press release as a joke.  Now professional PR practitioners must
live with another attack on our credibility.
