It's hard to hold back a good story, one that engages and draws you in. One such story traveled the blogosphere last week and eventually was picked up by traditional media. It's the story about the Ipod that saved a soldier's life. Later it was determined the soldier's body armor did all the work, but hey, it plays better when its a piece of popular entertainment, right?
This is an example of how a good story grabbed attention and became it's own meme. It also shows how social media and current tools allow people to carry the story forward through word-of-mouth or friend-to-friend. If you expect this much attention, make sure you have an exceptional story; without it and you're just spinning your wheels, spamming journalists and wasting your time.
Social media tools work best at generating buzz. I can't imagine this story wouldn't have made the news eventually, but like all good stories someone had to tell it, and from there it followed the expected path, landing on front pages and home pages everywhere.
