Everybody loves you. They want you. You are bigger than anything and the accolades keep rolling in. At least that's what you're thinking it should be like. If you're just starting out in a business or embarking on the path to Super Stardom you must realize that it doesn't work quite that way. Before you go off and pout, I want to show you a few things that may substantiate your inflated view of yourself.
A Stage for Displaying You: The Brand
When building a platform, a stage for your personal brand, you need to realize that while not everyone is beating a path to your door, every time you focus on your platform you are laying down the small stones that are building the path to your door. Every focused effort on your personal strengths and passions will lead you toward a bigger and better personal platform. Every time you post a comment, write on your blog, meet with a group, lecture to an audience, appear on television, stand up for your rights or demonstrate your passion you are building the platform; the one thing you are known for.
The problem many people have is that they haven't focused on that one thing they need to be known for. They are all over the place and not focused. That is why I want you to spend the time required to really figure out what it is that motivates you, excites the spirit and fuels your passion. Then we'll focus on that to build your platform.
A platform has nothing to do with your credentials, your work history or even your propensity to make everyone laugh. Those things work into a personal platform, but it's more about how your expertise is recognized by others. If you're known for belching and rubbing your belly, then that expertise needs to be shown frequently to the people that care and appreciate it. A few things to continue considering as you develop a platform:
1. What expertise do you have and how can your share it?
2. Who do you know that can help you build your platform?
3. Do those people recognize you for your passion or expertise? Does your name immediately come to mind when someone asks them for your expertise?
4. How visible are you already? Do you volunteer your talents and share your expertise with others?
5. If you're not as well known today, how well-known do you hope to be by next year?
You can be known as the Greatest Somebody In The World, but it will require focusing on your strengths, pinpointing your one or two areas of expertise, and then sharing them with others. In the next post, we will review how to subtly build a strong platform and accelerate your efforts to ensure success.
