Who are you and why should anyone care?

This is a serious question. People talk about people that are interesting, intriguing and special. Which means that if you're only known for sitting around the house, drinking beer and shouting at Spike TV then you're going to need to come up with something else. There's already a huge stable of Bubbas out there who have filled your unique popularity position. When I meet with potential clients I quickly try and pinpoint their uniqueness. I need to know what makes them special. What are their passions? Do they have a special story? What makes them tick? What interests do they have? Of course, in most cases I am helping an individual promote a program, business opportunity or a service. Whether it is a new author, artist or performer, I am looking for that one thing that makes them stand out from everyone else.

If you're going to become famous, then you're going to need to find that one thing that makes you stand out. And if that is spending all of your time at the mall or rushing off to buy garden supplies at the Home Depot so that you get your picture taken, that might work, but Lauren Conrad has already beaten you to the punch.

So start thinking about your uniqueness and special abilities. If you don't think of anything right away, don't worry, I can probably find something. But I will tell you right now that it's not going to be easy. And if we don't find it, well, I might send you back to the beer locker and the TV.

Winners Start Off Struggling

Thought of something?

Good! You now need to do that one thing over and over again. Become passionate about it. Be seen doing it. You need a platform; a stage to perform. People need to know you for that unique thing that makes you special. I stopped counting the number of people who just thought that they could jump on the scene and start doing something, or sell something, without having a background for others to rely on. You can't just pop out of the ground a success. It takes work.

Even the Heidi's and the Lauren's of the world have shown they have that something special, or nobody would have started following them around with a camera. Rarely do people who are considered winners and worthy of attention start out at the front of the pack. They all struggled to get to the top. They all learned what it was that made them promotable and exploited that quality. Hype and promotion is built upon a foundation. That foundation is your platform.

We're going to talk about platform for the next few blog posts examining all of the elements that help build a firm foundation. I'll see you then.

Cheers!

WM.
