Twitter Twetiquette

Posted on Apr 24 , 2007 in Communication

Stumbled toward the bed late last night and right into a cool discussion weighing the advantages of Twitter direct messages over public stream messages. Andrea Weckerle commented that she seemed to receive better direct message conversations than the messages found out in the open. I agreed by weighing in that my most thought provoking and helpful conversations were made through the direct messages I had received from friends.

This brought in Lee Hopkins from Australia and Ike Pigott from Alabama, and we were carrying on a live Twitter conversation across three time zones. Ike pointed out that most of his best direct messages were prompted by something somebody said in the public stream, which then led him to an idea or thought that he shared with a friend.

Andrea always seems to Twit something in the public stream that generates thought and further discussion. At this point, Lee Hopkins and I have each blogged on this topic. Any other ideas Andrea?

Hey there, this is one of those quirky questions we’ve been asking amongst ourselves at my social media marketing agency: what is the best way to communicate using Twitter? For example, are DMs or @ replies more appropriate for certain situations? We started a survey on the subject, in case you’re interested in participating: http://tr.im/i0mP
