Todd, I see the extra step and it clearly points to monitoring your messages. I worry about those folks who use the SMNR to blast out a message and forget it. Clearly, they tread in deep waters, but it seems important to ensure feedback is not forgotten or misplaced. Thanks for adding to the discussion - I know you're busy.

Hi Michael - the SMNR is supposed to support comments; ultimately at the issuers' website, where the news basically is formatted like a blog post. It is up to the corporate spokesperson to moderate, monitor and respond at that place in space.

Completely agree, Michael.
For the New Zealand e-government releases, we adopted the approach that the release itself (hRelease) will not support comments (partially because it would mean rebuilding our website), but the del.icio.us page that supports the release will include any and all commentary (unless it is obscene or otherwise offensive).
This way there is a permanent record of the release, and anyone interested can either go to the del.icio.us page, or search on the tags provided on the release to follow the discussion and participate if they choose.
It is not ideal, but I think it is a good bridging strategy.

[...] Michael Sommermeyer touches upon one possible pilot project in a post largely about the need to enable comment and feedback mechanisms on the social media news release: “However, government agencies might consider the template, especially as they seek input on ordinances, procedures and laws; they have more of a reason to generate a conversation.” [...]
